personaggiThe City | Famous People | Roberto Fioravanti, musicologist

In 1967, the Italian record critic assigned the Oscar for the LP, in the category of classical music, to the "Seven Sonatas" by Alessandro Scarlatti, written for flute, strings and harpsichord. It was recorded by the Italian Institute of Eighteenth century Music, founded in Prato by Luciano Bettarini (composer and orchestral conductor) and Roberto Fioravanti (musicologist); the councillors of which, consisted of, Giuseppe Bigagli, Mario Bellandi, Luciano Magnini, Nino Piraino and Giannino Veronesi. The unpublished score by Scarlatti was discovered by Bettarini in the library of the Naples Conservatory. The "continuous bass" was recognised by the famous flute player Severino Gazzelloni. For the recording Bettarini played the harpsichord and conducting the ensemble. The record was awarded the Oscar, for its historical and artistic importance and for the pleasant balance between the solo and the ensemble. This important event reminds us of the tragic death of Roberto Fioravanti, who's life was taken in a road accident on the 13th of October 1982. He was very attentive to the Italian musical life, and contributed to the development of the Pratese culture. He recorded another successful record: Sonatas for organ and harpsichord by the Pratese 18th century composer Domenico Zipoly, played by the organist Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini. He had been president and secretary of the Pratese Rotary Club several times, a member of important economical institutions (Cassa di Risparmio and the Industrial Union), and councillor of the "Azienda Autonoma di Turismo" and of the International Institute of Economic History "Francesco Datini". He was the musical critic for the journal "La Nazione" and had collaborated on it since the first issue of the review "Prato-Storia e Arte"(1960). In it he published, and serialised, the "History of music in Prato from 1200 to 1900" (later printed in one volume). He was also an author of songs and music for Tuscan plays such as "Vendemmia e amore", and was asked by Giuseppe Giagnoni, by request of the Mayor Roberto Giovannini and the "Azienda di Turismo", to organise the performance of the "Trovatore", for the re-opening night of the Metastasio Theatre.
