Giuseppe Bigagli unexpectedly died on the 15th of
May 1983. Although he was eighty-two years of age,
he had still kept himself busy with his mechanical
factory "Officine e Fonderie Bigagli" (he was a clever
entrepreneur), and his participation towards local
institutions. In 1952, together with Mario Bellandi,
they became the founders of the "Associazione Turistica
Pratese"; he was President of the "Azienda Autonoma
di Turismo" until 1968; First President of the International
Institute of Economical History "Francesco Datini";
President of the "Industrial Union"; Councillor of
the "Cassa di Risparmio" (Bank); President of the
Rotary Club; Councillor of the Town Hall…just to mention
some of the positions he held with prestige and seriousness.
He was also the animator and editor of the review
"Prato-Storia e Arte", since its first edition in
April 1960. The publication of this review followed
one of many books that looked at the history of Prato,
its artistic heritage, city guides and catalogues
of exhibitions and museums. He was compiling these
publications, in order to make the Pratese historical
and artistic traditions known to a large number of
people. Bigagli had many important people from the
Italian cultural world working as collaborators for
the review. He wrote in the article "Perseverando",
in issue 17 of the review: "We are sure that for anybody
that, in the future, will study Prato and the Pratese,
our review will be a very precious source".
